A new study has demonstrated significant gender differences in how information, including auditory information, is processed.
During the 190th session of the Acoustical Society of America, held from May 11 to 15, researcher Angelina Bellocone from the University of Maryland presented research that may change the traditional view of auditory physiology and methods of treating its disorders.
Scientists have confirmed that the human auditory system is incredibly precise and sensitive. As the Pelocon study demonstrated, the activity of brain cells in the areas responsible for processing sounds is directly influenced by hormones. Any fluctuations in hormone levels in the body lead to changes in the structures and mechanisms associated with auditory function.
This results in significant differences in the course of age-related changes between men and women. Tests have shown the following:
In men: Hearing begins to deteriorate early, but this process occurs gradually and at a steady pace throughout life.
In women: Auditory sensitivity experiences regular monthly fluctuations that are closely related to the menstrual cycle.
During menopause: Women experience a sharp and sudden decrease in the quality of their auditory perception.
By reanalyzing a large body of available auditory data, Bellocun shifted the focus of her research. Her team no longer simply assessed hearing acuity at a specific point in time, but rather studied how auditory processes continuously interact with other important biological events in the body. Thus, auditory changes cannot be viewed in isolation from overall health and the hormonal system.
The problem is not limited to the ability to hear faint sounds, as hormones also affect the complex behavioral aspects of auditory perception.
Ultimately, recognizing the biological differences between men and women may allow for a move away from standardized treatment protocols, paving the way for more personalized therapy and more accurate diagnosis of hearing disorders. This approach would contribute to improving the quality of healthcare for patients.
