Power outage hits Libya's water lifeline

A power outage has hit Libya’s Great Man-Made River system, causing all of the system’s stations to go offline, the Great Man-Made River Authority announced on Monday.

The agency explained that the outage led to the shutdown of stations starting from the well fields area up to the two connecting pumping stations, which led to the cessation of pumping operations in large parts of the system.

The agency confirmed that all technical and engineering teams are ready, and that they will begin restarting the pumps and stations as soon as the electricity supply is restored from the source.

The agency stressed that teams are working to ensure the continuity of water supply and to prevent water access to citizens from being affected, at a time when the electricity network is experiencing pressure and frequent outages in the western region.

The shutdown of the Great Man-Made River system coincides with a severe electricity crisis, highlighting once again the link between the stability of the electrical grid and the continuity of one of the most important sources of water supply in Libya.
