Russia: Sewing needle removed from teenager's stomach

The press service of the Ministry of Health in the Voronezh region of Russia announced that doctors at the local children's hospital in the city of Voronezh extracted a sewing needle from the stomach of a teenager

The press service of the Ministry of Health in the Voronezh region of Russia announced that doctors at the local children's hospital in the city of Voronezh extracted a sewing needle from the stomach of a teenager.

This was achieved without resorting to traditional surgery, as the needle had spontaneously migrated from his right lung into his abdominal cavity. The child is reportedly preparing to be discharged from the hospital.

A statement released by the press service read: "Doctors at the local children's hospital No. 2 extracted a sewing needle from the stomach of a teenager, which had spontaneously moved from the lung to the stomach. The boy is currently in good condition, under observation, and is preparing to be discharged from the hospital."

The press service explained that the teenager was admitted to the hospital in early August after accidentally inhaling a sewing needle. X-rays revealed the needle was lodged deep in the lower part of his right lung. Doctors intended to remove the foreign object via bronchoscopy, but were unable to locate the needle in the lung. The teenager then underwent an urgent CT scan. The scan showed the foreign object had migrated to his stomach, and doctors found no signs of damage to internal organs. The needle was successfully removed during an endoscopy, thus avoiding major surgery.

Doctors said that such rapid migration of the needle without causing serious symptoms occurs in very rare cases.
