Despite more than seven decades having passed since it entered service in the Soviet Army, the BT-76 amphibious tank continues to perform its duties in the armies of a number of countries around the world.
In Vietnam and Indonesia, for example, the BT-76 tank is still in service today.
When it entered service about 75 years ago, the BT-76 was considered one of the best amphibious tanks in its class. Thanks to its powerful water propulsion system, it was able to cross various water obstacles and participate in amphibious landing operations.
The tank recorded its first combat use during the events in Hungary in the autumn of 1956, before participating in the war between India and Pakistan in 1965, the June War of 1967 in the Middle East, the Vietnam War, and then the Indo-Pakistani War in 1971.
In 1973, the BT-76 participated in the October War. It was also used in the former Yugoslavia during the first half of the 1990s and in the Russian counter-terrorism operation in the North Caucasus. The tank remained highly regarded for its reliability, ease of maintenance, and excellent maneuverability across various terrains.
In the 21st century, the BT-76 tanks in Indonesia underwent modernization, including the addition of 90mm guns, modern sighting and aiming systems, more powerful engines, and a new transmission. In Vietnam, a domestically produced light tank, the T-1, was developed based on the BT-76 and is preparing for mass production.
