Amidst the foliage of a distant forest, a sudden croak pierces the stillness, only for silence to return. Some might believe that tranquility reigns in such a natural setting, but the truth is quite different. The forest is one of the most tense and watchful places on Earth, scrutinizing every movement. Every sound and every color is meticulously observed and analyzed, revealing either a ferocious and merciless predator or prey seeking escape and concealment.

This was revealed in a recent study in the scientific journal "Trends in Ecology and Evolution," as cautious and organized behavior is not exclusive to humans in their conflicts, but is practiced by groups of wild animals in their natural environments to avoid conflicts with competing groups of the same species and to secure an advantage that ensures their survival.

Researchers analyzed hundreds of previous studies to develop a unified scientific framework describing the precautionary behaviors animals adopt before any actual confrontation. Traditionally, research for decades has focused on what happens during or immediately after animal fights, but this study focused on the flexible, proactive measures that occur in the complete absence of adversaries.

Josh Arbon, one of the study's lead researchers from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol, told Al Jazeera Net in an exclusive interview: "We see evidence across the animal kingdom of animals gathering information to try to better assess the threat posed by rivals; where are they? How many are there? And are they likely to want to fight? This information can also influence how groups move across space and use resources, such as reducing foraging and avoiding certain areas. We also see changes in social behaviors within groups as individuals try to build stronger relationships with their allies to ensure that their group is cohesive and committed to each other if a rival is encountered and a fight breaks out."

The study proposes a new scientific concept called the "group conflict scene," a concept similar to the well-known ecological term "fear scene," which explains how vulnerable animals change their movement patterns out of fear of predators.

To simplify this concept, we can imagine how a group of chimpanzees avoids a particular spot in the forest because they know that this area is a direct line of contact with a rival chimpanzee group.

In nature, the risk of confrontations is not concentrated equally in every place and time, but is distributed in the form of varying terrains of tension and calm, where the threat is significantly higher in areas of shared borders or near scarce resources such as fruit trees and water sources.

Social animals delve into the intricacies of a complex group conflict scenario, adjusting their defensive and social strategies according to the changing threat level associated with location and the identity of competitors.

The study categorizes these remarkable proactive responses into four main areas, demonstrating how animals prepare for upcoming events. The first focuses on reconnaissance and heightened surveillance. Chimpanzee groups are a prime example, resorting to climbing high hills when approaching areas of contact with rival groups and maintaining complete silence.

Josh explains: "Remaining quiet in potentially risky scenarios has the dual benefit of making yourself difficult to detect by anyone who might be listening, while increasing your chances of hearing nearby competitors. This allows animals to make more informed decisions before being pushed into competition, potentially providing an ambush or withdrawal from dangerous rivals."

The second aspect involves spatial use and boundary security. For example, when a pygmy ferret senses danger from its neighbors, it slows its daily pace to focus more on observing signs in its surroundings. It also spends more time inspecting shared toilet stations.
