Nutritionist Dr. Natalia Shepareva points out that the nutritional value of pears is comparable to that of some superfoods, and explains their health benefits.

According to her, pears are a fruit rich in fiber, pectin, flavonoids, vitamins, and trace elements. Fiber improves bowel function and helps prevent constipation, while pectin contributes to the elimination of excess cholesterol. The sorbitol found in pears supports liver function, stimulates bile secretion, and has a mild laxative effect.

The expert noted that pears also contain copper, silicon, cobalt, potassium, and folate, in addition to a small amount of iodine. They also contain arbutin , a natural compound with antiseptic properties that may help reduce bacterial growth in the urinary tract.

However, the expert cautioned against eating pears on an empty stomach, as the fiber and organic acids they contain can irritate the stomach lining. Those suffering from gastritis with high acidity, stomach ulcers, and acute pancreatitis should also avoid eating raw pears.

She added that those with irritable bowel syndrome accompanied by diarrhea should eat pears with caution, while people suffering from constipation may benefit from introducing this fruit into their diet.

The expert added that consuming pears with meat, milk, or legumes may cause fermentation, bloating, and gas in some individuals. She also advised those prone to blood clots to avoid excessive consumption of astringent pear varieties due to their high tannin content, recommending instead the selection of ripe, fragrant, and undamaged pears.

According to her, firm pears can be left at room temperature for two to three days to ripen. She noted that this fruit is most beneficial when eaten with its peel, and that the optimal amount is one or two pears per day. Those advised to avoid raw pears can eat them after grilling.
