The James Webb Space Telescope has captured new images of a planetary nebula known as the Lion Nebula, revealing intricate details of its complex structure that resembles the face of a giant lion in space.

At the center of this scene lies the remains of a star that has ended most of its life and turned into an extremely hot white dwarf, while its outer layers, which it ejected into space, continue to form the nebula surrounding it.

The Hubble Space Telescope spotted the Lion Nebula in 2000, when it appeared clearly in visible light with a shape resembling a lion's face, including a region resembling its mane, and made up of hazy structures similar to comet tails.

James Webb's new observation, which collected data from a near-infrared camera and a mid-infrared instrument, revealed details that are difficult to see in visible light.

The death of a star transforms into a cosmic masterpiece.
The star that created this nebula belongs to the lowest-mass class of stars, the class to which most stars in the universe belong. When a star of this type loses its ability to sustain the nuclear reactions that supported its structure, it becomes unstable and begins to pulsate, gradually ejecting its outer layers into space.

These ejected layers transform into expanding shells of gas and dust, forming what is known as a planetary nebula—the future of our Sun a few billion years from now. Meanwhile, the star's extremely hot core at the center is exposed and eventually settles into a white dwarf.

In the Lion Nebula, this white dwarf continues to emit powerful radiation that pushes the surrounding material outward, heating and ionizing it. This creates a bubble of ionized gas that gives the nebula its distinctive features.

Infrared light reveals what the image hides
James Webb demonstrated the presence of dense concentrations of dust and hazy regions of ionized gas, and also revealed complex rings and envelopes that astronomers are still trying to understand how they formed.

The white dwarf, when viewed in general terms as a nebula, appears like a small nose in the middle of a lion's face, although its impact on the surrounding environment is enormous. Its intense radiation forms a bubble of ionized gas that gradually expands, pushing dust ahead and destroying some of it as it advances.

In these cosmic captures, the Lion Nebula is the mane attraction. A dying star casts off its outer layers to create this intricate structure of gas and dust. Scientists think that it will disperse in about 10,000 years... which is very short, in astronomical terms.
The lion's mane-like structure represents an inner region of a dust envelope illuminated by the white dwarf. Within this envelope are dense clouds of dust that have withstood the intense radiation, and these clouds also act as shields, protecting the materials behind them.
