The United Nations said that 94% of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip need shelter and basic household supplies, amid widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure and the continued and repeated displacement of the population.
The organization added that four out of every five families living in shelters are facing critical or catastrophic levels of hunger, with limited access to food and a declining ability to secure basic needs.
She noted that the shortage of fuel, energy and essential supplies is restricting the population’s ability to sleep, prepare food, bathe and store food and water, as well as providing lighting and protection from temperature fluctuations.
A large number of displaced people are living in overcrowded tents and shelters lacking blankets, mattresses, cooking utensils and hygiene supplies, while power outages and water shortages are increasing health risks and worsening living conditions.
These warnings come at a time when the sector is facing an ongoing humanitarian crisis, with widespread damage to residential buildings and restrictions on the entry of humanitarian supplies and fuel, exacerbating the needs of the population and limiting the ability of relief agencies to respond.
