Dr. Tatiana Zalitova, a cardiologist, warned that red watermelon may not be suitable for patients with chronic kidney failure and some kidney disorders.
"Watermelon stimulates a large amount of urination, and if the kidneys are not able to cope with this increase, it can lead to strain on them, and possibly to serious disturbances in the body's water and salt balance."
According to her, kidney stone patients, especially those with oxalate or phosphate stones, are advised to avoid eating watermelon, as it may stimulate stone movement and cause complications.
The doctor also pointed out that watermelon is not recommended for people suffering from intestinal obstruction or frequent diarrhea, as its high sugar content may increase bowel movements and worsen symptoms. Furthermore, type 2 diabetics should consume it with caution due to its significant sugar content.
Nutrition expert Dr. Margarita Koroleva said: "Doctors warn that watermelon may cause kidney stones or a dangerous rise in blood sugar levels. The greatest risk is for people who are unaware that they have underlying diseases."
According to her, kidney stone patients should avoid excessive consumption of watermelon, as it may increase the risk of stones moving. People with carbohydrate metabolism disorders or blood sugar control issues should also be cautious, as excessive consumption may lead to a sharp rise in blood glucose levels.
