A recent study by the University of East Anglia reveals that aging not only affects our ability to remember the past, but also changes the way we retrieve our memories.
As the years pass, memories tend to lose some of their finer details, while general information about events becomes more present in memory.
The study, published in the journal "Psychology and Aging," indicates that older adults have greater difficulty switching between different types of memories, especially when it requires quickly switching between memories related to specific events and memories related to recurring or general experiences.
The researchers wanted to find out if aging affects a person's ability to switch between different types of memories, as well as how the content of these memories themselves changes.
Professor Louis Renaud, the lead researcher from the School of Psychology at the University of East Anglia, said that human memories become less detailed and more general with age, so that a person tends to remember the overall picture of the event rather than the details of the moment itself.
Specific memories include events that occurred on a single occasion, such as a birthday party, while general memories are related to repeated experiences, such as going to work.
The study involved 74 people, including 37 students representing the youth category and 37 elderly members of the community.
The researchers asked participants to recall memories in response to trigger words, such as the word "market". Initially, participants recalled each type of memory separately, then they were asked to switch between specific and general memories.
The aim of this step was to test the participants' ability to control the process of recalling memories and to adapt to the change required of them.
The researchers measured the extent to which participants adhered to the instructions, along with the number of details included in their answers.
Switching between memories was more difficult for older people.
The results showed that memory performance declined in all participants when they had to switch between different types of memories. However, the effect was most pronounced in older adults when recalling memories associated with routine and repetitive experiences, such as going to work.
In contrast, their ability to recall specific memories, such as remembering a birthday party, was not affected to the same degree.
Researchers believe that some forms of memory retrieval may be more affected by aging when a person needs to change their way of thinking quickly or deal with more than one demand at the same time.
Analysis of the content of the memories revealed a clear difference between age groups. When older adults recalled specific events, they provided fewer details about the sights, sounds, and feelings associated with the event.
In contrast, their accounts included a greater amount of general information and explanations related to the event. A similar pattern emerged when recalling general and recurring memories.
According to the researchers, this change means that aging does not necessarily lead to the disappearance of memories, but may change the way they are accessed and recalled.
These changes may affect some everyday tasks that require switching between different ideas or types of information, such as telling a story, making a decision, or solving a problem that requires recalling details from past experiences.
But increased reliance on general information doesn't necessarily have a negative aspect. Accumulated knowledge helps in understanding similar situations, recognizing patterns, making decisions, and communicating with others.
The researchers hope that these findings will contribute to understanding the changes that occur in memory with age, and to developing methods that help maintain brain health and cognitive abilities throughout different stages of life.
