Scientists have developed a new blood test that helps detect pancreatic cancer in its early stages.
Nature Medicine noted that the new test, "PANXEON," is an innovative experimental blood test (liquid biopsy) designed for the early detection of pancreatic cancer with high accuracy before clinical symptoms appear. Trials have shown that it is able to detect the disease in its first and second stages with an accuracy of up to 87%.
Pancreatic cancer is often discovered at a late stage, when the disease is more difficult to treat, but the new test, according to its developers, could help detect the disease earlier in people who are more susceptible, such as those with a genetic predisposition or chronic pancreatitis.
PANXEON analyzes several indicators in the blood simultaneously: microRNA, exosomes, and CA19-9 protein. The AI then combines this data and assesses the likelihood of a tumor.
More than 1,800 doctors, scientists and specialists from different countries participated in developing this test, and trials have shown that it is able to detect more than 64% of cases of severe dysplasia, a precancerous condition that may develop into cancer.
Scientists point out that the analysis does not currently replace standard diagnosis, but it may help doctors in the future to direct patients from at-risk groups more quickly to additional tests, and detect cancer before symptoms appear.
