A Russian student develops a miniature suicide drone that locates enemies by their voices


The Russian armed forces possess sophisticated acoustic systems capable of detecting footsteps and even picking up enemy conversations at distances of up to several kilometers.

A system of this type has now appeared, but on a smaller scale, as it has been integrated into the Provod-15 FPV suicide drone, which is equipped with a 40-kilometer-long optical fiber coil, produced by a factory in the Russian city of Tula.

This type of drone will be able to travel tens of kilometers, land near camouflaged enemy positions, listen to sounds, analyze the Ukrainian language, and then deliver a deadly strike.

It is not unlikely that the Russian drones will be equipped with sound systems invented by a high school student in the Kemerovo region, named Nikolai Barsukov, after testing them and adding a night vision camera and a thermal imaging device to them.

The eighth-grade student unveiled his invention at the booth of the "Russian Association of Inventors and Creators" (VOIR), as part of the "Technoprom" International Forum for Technological Development, which was held in the Russian city of Novosibirsk.

Anthony Schwendt, a member of the VOIR Coordinating Council's Presidium, was briefed on the student's development at a platform showcasing robotic systems designed for special operations.

Nikolai explained that he designed his invention as a psychological aid for lost people, as the person sees light signals, realizes that help is near, then starts shouting, and the system sends his coordinates to rescuers.

The inventor explained that he developed his independent audio system so that drones could locate people during search operations. Such a drone could pick up a human voice in a dense forest or among the rubble after an earthquake, determine its coordinates, and report them to the operator.

Often, an injured person can make contact via their mobile phone, but they are no longer able to explain their location to the operator. This is where drones equipped with the eighth-grade student's invention can help, as search teams will be able to locate missing persons more quickly, without needing an army of volunteers, helicopters, or specialized equipment.

Nikolai’s integrated audio system has attracted the attention of the military, as it contains everything needed to develop new drones, including its own power source, a sensitive microphone, and AI-based software to distinguish between human voices, nature noise, and the sound of the drone’s engines themselves.

For the military, it is crucial that drones equipped with Nikolai Barsukov's promising system be able to locate the enemy by sound. This means they will be able to operate autonomously within a defined area and more quickly, as they will not need to analyze and transmit large amounts of visual data.
