The message came during a special session held by the UN Security Council on artificial intelligence, which was attended by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amode via video call, as well as the presence of Hackingface CEO Clement Delange and the godfather of artificial intelligence, Joshua Bengio.
This session comes amid global controversy surrounding the technology following a series of cyberattacks and breaches carried out by artificial intelligence models that targeted global companies and platforms, with major companies announcing the involvement of their models in such attacks.
Altman explained that it is not necessarily a bad or dangerous technology, adding: "We have a choice: either artificial intelligence will be closer to a new renaissance of creativity, or a new industrial revolution of disruption and chaos."
He called for the utmost caution at the moment while speaking to a hall that included high-level foreign ministers attending the United Nations summit .
In their separate conversations, Altman and Amode stressed the need for international cooperation to establish standards that ensure the safety of artificial intelligence as it develops rapidly.
They also warned very clearly of the risk of losing control over artificial intelligence systems and models or them falling into the wrong hands.
Amoudi explained during his speech: "If it is mismanaged, I believe that artificial intelligence could pose a danger to all of humanity."
Altman and Amodi also explained that their companies are committed to slowing down the rollout of AI models if any threat or danger is detected from one of the models, in line with Amodi’s call in recent weeks to slow down the development of the technology.
However, both companies have introduced new models since the call for proposals began, with Anthropic recently unveiling the Opus 5.5 and OpenAI revealing the GPT6 Luna and GPT6 Sol.
Direct conflict with Trump's policy
Altman and Amode’s statements contradict the viewpoint of US President Donald Trump, which he has adopted on more than one platform, whether through posts on “Truth Social” or even his call with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and his speech at the opening of the current United Nations session.
Trump sees calls to slow down artificial intelligence as a conspiracy that benefits the United States' biggest rival, China, comparing them to warnings about the dangers of global warming that spread in past years.
Trump also rejected global efforts to regulate artificial intelligence, asserting that the United States "completely rejects any attempt to build a global scheme to control artificial intelligence," in contrast to the demands made by Altman and Amodey to the Security Council for the necessity of global coordination.
