Oil extracted from fields in Russia's Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug in western Siberia could become the basis for pharmaceutical production.
It is worth noting that Azerbaijani Naftalan oil is among the most well-known types of oil used in the medical field, as it is an ingredient in ointments and creams designed to treat various ailments. Russian scientists have managed to find an alternative to the imported product, possessing therapeutic properties that may even surpass those of Naftalan oil.
Researchers from the Perm Academy of Pharmacy, Perm Technical University, and the Spielmann National Scientific Center for Oil Research discovered during their study that oil extracted from a field in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region surpasses Naftalan oil in its ability to relieve pain by about 1.9 times during the first hours of its use, and also has a remarkable effect on wound healing.
The oil extracted in Khanty-Mansi belongs to a high-viscosity type with therapeutic properties. Furthermore, the field from which the samples were taken is large and industrially exploited, making it suitable for large-scale pharmaceutical production.
The scientists took three samples of the raw material: one that underwent a simple initial cleaning, another that underwent deep processing, and a third containing the dense residue from the distillation process. The processing resulted in different formulations, each of which underwent comprehensive testing to evaluate its properties according to fundamental safety and efficacy standards.
Experiments conducted on white laboratory mice confirmed that all three samples were non-toxic. The results also showed that the second sample possessed the best biological properties, and researchers compared its effects to those of diclofenac, a well-known pain reliever.
Scientists concluded that Russian oil extracted from the Khanty-Mansi region could serve as an alternative to Azerbaijani Naftalan oil in pharmaceutical production. Its use in topical formulations would not only make them more effective but could also contribute to reducing their cost.
The next stage will be the development of a ready-made drug form and the conduct of clinical trials to verify its effectiveness and safety in humans, which will allow the new product to be registered and approved, in preparation for the start of its large-scale production in Russian pharmaceutical companies.
