The Spanish League's referees' technical committee has acknowledged a refereeing error during the Madrid derby between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
Atletico Madrid won the capital derby against Real Madrid with a score of 2-1, but the match witnessed several refereeing decisions that sparked widespread controversy, the most prominent of which was the strong tackle by South Korean player Lee Kang-in on Federico Valverde, which caused the Uruguayan player to injure his left ankle.
According to the Spanish newspaper AS, the referees' technical committee concluded that the intervention warranted a red card, considering that referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias and the video assistant referee erred by not intervening and making the appropriate decision.
Valverde suffered a painful injury after Lee Kang-in's foot collided with his ankle, and Real Madrid's medical staff confirmed the extent of the injury, which caused discontent within the club, especially given the player's importance to coach Jose Mourinho.
The committee's review was not limited to this incident, as it also discussed two other cases from the Madrid derby.
The committee upheld the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decision to intervene and send off Real Madrid defender Dean Howson, after he committed a deliberate foul against Atletico Madrid's Giuliano Simeone.
In contrast, the committee considered that not sending off Christian Romero after his strong tackle on Jude Bellingham fell under ambiguous cases, and therefore supported the referee's decision to simply not show the red card.
Arias initially showed the yellow card to Bellingham following a clash with Romero, before reversing his decision after video technology intervention.
Jose Mourinho expressed his anger at the refereeing decisions after the match, criticizing the performance of referee Arias and video assistant referee Daniel Jesus Trujillo Suarez.
The Portuguese coach said that the referee was, in his opinion, not suitable to manage a match of the magnitude of the Madrid derby, and he also pointed to what he described as the controversial refereeing record of the Video Assistant Referee in previous Real Madrid matches.
The admission of the refereeing error comes at a time when Real Madrid are facing the fallout from Valverde's injury, who has been present in all of the team's matches this season and is an important element in Mourinho's midfield.
The injury also threatens the player's participation with the Uruguayan national team in upcoming friendly matches, adding further uncertainty about when he will return to the field.
