Ironically, the term Trump chose isn't simply a more positive formulation of artificial intelligence. In the tech world, "superintelligence" has a different technical meaning: a virtual artificial intelligence system that surpasses humans in a wide range of cognitive abilities.
False intelligence or dazzling intelligence?
During his speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Trump said the United States would refer to artificial intelligence as "superintelligence" in U.S. documents.
According to USA Today, Trump justified his choice by saying that using the word "artificial" makes intelligence sound "fake," adding that this technology is "not fake" but "amazing," while warning at the same time of the need to deal with it with caution.
The name suggestion was not solely the product of the United Nations speech. According to the newspaper, Trump had previously put forward other options for changing the name, including "Superior Intelligence," "Extreme Intelligence," and "Supreme Intelligence," before settling on the expression "Superintelligence" in his speech.
Thus, for Trump, change appears to be an attempt to express his view of technology: real and impressive intelligence, not something "artificial" in the sense that the word might suggest.
But for artificial intelligence specialists, another problem arises with the name.
The educational platform Coursera explains, in its explanation of the concept of "Superintelligence," that "superintelligence" is a theoretical form of artificial intelligence that does not currently exist.
Coursera: Superintelligence is, so far, a hypothetical stage in which systems become more capable than humans in a wide range of tasks and cognitive abilities.
According to this technical usage, superintelligence can surpass human capabilities in speed, reasoning, knowledge, and problem-solving.
