The Iranian armed forces claimed to have received intelligence indicating that the United States had decided to launch a new attack on Iran “with the approval of some countries in the region,” according to their assertion, and vowed a “painful response” without any restrictions or discrimination.
This came in a statement issued by the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters on Sunday.
The statement read: “We warn that if the United States makes another mistake against Iran, all its assets in the region and the locations where American personnel are present will be targets for painful attacks without any restrictions or discrimination.”
The statement added that Iran would consider regional countries complicit in “the evils of the United States” if they joined it in acts of aggression against Iran, emphasizing that “restraint should not be expected from the Iranian armed forces” in such a case.
For his part, Brigadier General Ali Jahanshahi, commander of the Iranian Army Ground Forces, said that his country’s border units were prepared to confront potential threats.
There has been no official comment from the United States regarding the claims made by the Iranian Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters.
On February 28, 2016, the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran, which was followed by Tehran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important maritime chokepoints for global oil and gas exports.
On June 17, 2016, Washington and Tehran signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which stipulated a cessation of military operations and the commencement of arrangements to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to navigation. However, the implementation of the agreement subsequently stalled amid disagreements regarding its application and navigation in the strait, before renewed confrontations erupted last July.
