Pro Ref, the organization responsible for referees' work in English Premier League football matches, has acknowledged that Manchester City striker Erling Haaland's goal against Manchester United was wrongly ruled out.
Journalist Ben Jacobs posted on his X platform page, quoting a statement from Pro Ref, that the organization believes the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) misinterpreted the role and position of Manchester City's Argentine player Enzo Fernandez, who was offside in the play in which the goal was scored, and should have intervened to organize the view of the play for the main referee.
The statement read: "We contacted Manchester United this evening to acknowledge the mistake. An investigation into the incident will take place."
The match took place on Sunday and ended in a Manchester City victory. Haaland scored the only goal of the game. Manchester City played with ten men from the 23rd minute onwards after one of their players was sent off.
This admission of error is a rare occurrence in the Premier League, where the league and Pro Ref typically remain silent regarding refereeing mistakes, especially in high-profile matches. This admission is expected to spark widespread debate about the use of VAR and its impact on match results.
