PSIM did this to optimize their fitness after they had just played their second week match in East Java, namely when they lost 0-1 to Persebaya Surabaya at Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium.
"The management and coaching team have agreed to stay in Surabaya to prevent player fatigue from travel. After the intense match against Persebaya, the players desperately need adequate rest," said PSIM team manager Iksan Mahar, as quoted on the club's.
Besides fitness risks, travel efficiency was also a key focus. Access from Surabaya, which is relatively close to Pamekasan, was deemed more convenient than traveling back to Yogyakarta first. By staying in Surabaya, the team also had more time to prepare for the next match.
