Dmitry Stefanovich, a researcher at the Center for International Security of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that artificial intelligence could facilitate the development of weapons of mass destruction.
This came in a statement he made yesterday to the Russian news agency Novosti.
He explained: "There is another aspect related to nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction in general, which is that artificial intelligence and various neural networks may facilitate their development, and although not radically, they can achieve significant progress in this field."
He noted that stories now regularly appear in reports by the American company Anthropic, which specializes in artificial intelligence, mentioning some non-governmental figures, and sometimes even government officials, using artificial intelligence to develop or improve some lethal means, missiles, or drones.
He went on to say that "all of this cannot replace qualified scientific and engineering personnel, nor can it replace tests and experiments, but artificial intelligence can certainly improve this process."
Anthropic researcher Jacob Cookson previously resigned from his position in the artificial intelligence industry, fearing that the race among technology companies could bring the world closer to a "point of no return," and could lead to an end-of-the-world scenario in late 2027.
However, Anthropic CEO Dario Amode called for slowing down the development of the most powerful AI models for security reasons. Entrepreneur Elon Musk then expressed his agreement with this proposal to slow AI development.
