Russian scientists develop promising magnetic fluid for treating tumors

Scientists from the Russian universities of Sirius and Moscow, and the University of Skopje in North Macedonia, have created a water-based magnetic liquid containing nanoparticles of cobalt and iron oxides.

The research, which was supported by the Russian Science Foundation and the Sirius Federal District, was published in the journal "Surfaces and Interfaces".

Russian chemists have developed a non-toxic, water-based magnetic liquid containing stable cobalt and iron nanoparticles. This liquid heats up rapidly under the influence of a magnetic field and accelerates oxidation reactions similar to the natural enzyme peroxidase. According to the researchers, this development could be used in medical diagnostics and for targeted treatment of tumors.

These particles are affected by magnetic fields, allowing them to be directed at a tumor and heated to destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. However, magnetic nanoparticles often clump together and lose their properties. To prevent this, chemical coatings are used, which may hinder the particles' future use.

The study authors improved the method for synthesizing cobalt ferrite by altering the iron-to-cobalt ratio and reaction conditions, and by using ultrasound. As a result, a stable liquid was obtained without additional stabilizers. The coating that forms on the surface of the particles when cobalt reacts with water helps them repel each other.

Particles with a cobalt content 6.5 to 9 times lower than iron exhibited the best heating in a magnetic field. Those with higher cobalt content showed properties similar to those of the peroxidase enzyme, which could be beneficial in biosensors and cancer and infection detection tests.
