The Ministry of Health in the Russian region of Kuzbass reported via the "Max" platform that a teenager from the regional capital, Kemerovo, suffered extensive lung damage as a result of smoking electronic cigarettes ("vaping").

The ministry statement read: "Doctors at the local Atamanov Children's Clinical Hospital saved a teenager suffering from extensive lung damage due to vaping. The examination revealed bilateral lung damage. For the first time in Kemerovo, a child was diagnosed with lung disease related to vaping use."

The ministry's press service added that the patient, aged 16, was initially admitted to the hospital on suspicion of having pneumonia, where doctors treated respiratory failure syndrome and systemic poisoning.

A month after his discharge from the hospital, the teenager was readmitted to the medical facility, this time to the intensive care unit, after his blood oxygen saturation dropped to 65%, compared to the normal range of 95 to 100%.

The teenager initially denied using vapes excessively, but after undergoing a multi-slice CT scan and receiving a formal diagnosis of vaping-related lung disease, he admitted to smoking e-cigarettes for two years.

The teenager's health has now improved, and he no longer needs oxygen support.
