A study published in the scientific journal Nutrients showed that soybean oil consumption is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer.
Researchers compiled the results of 12 cohort studies involving 549,000 people, 3,164 of whom were diagnosed with bladder cancer during the follow-up period. After accounting for several factors that could increase the risk of developing the disease, they found that the risk of developing the disease was approximately 49% higher in people who consumed soybean oil compared to those who did not. This increased risk was observed with both moderate and high consumption of the product.
The results varied according to gender. In men, soybean oil consumption was associated with a higher risk of the disease, while in women, moderate consumption of soybeans was associated with a lower risk.
However, the scientists found no similar association for soy consumption in general, nor was the consumption of soybeans, soy milk, or unfermented soybean paste associated with an increased risk of cancer in the overall sample.
The researchers emphasize that the results show a statistical correlation but do not prove that soybean oil directly causes cancer , and that the reasons for the discovered relationship still need further investigation.
