In the Arabian Peninsula, where clear skies were one of the most important sources of knowledge about the surrounding environment, the Arabs observed the movement of the moon among the stars, and divided the path it travels in the sky into 28 lunar mansions, from Al-Shartain and Al-Butain to Al-Thurayya and Al-Dabaran and finally Al-Rasha.
These constellations were not merely names of scattered stars. Their appearance and disappearance were linked to the seasons and weather, becoming part of the Arabs' knowledge of weather patterns, winds, and rainfall. Observers would monitor the stars and their positions to determine the changing seasons, rainfall schedules, and temperatures, using this knowledge for grazing, travel, and agriculture.
