Trump will hold talks on Iran with Gulf leaders next week

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with leaders or foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council  countries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York  to discuss the next steps in the war with Iran, according to three sources familiar with the arrangements who spoke to Axios.

The sources said the meeting will focus on the US administration's ideas regarding a post-war strategy, at a time when Trump and his team are working on a plan for the next phase of the conflict, which is expected to be completed after the midterm congressional elections in November.

The upcoming meeting will include the leaders or foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman. Sources indicated that the US State Department issued initial invitations on Wednesday, and the meeting may expand to include leaders from other Arab and Muslim countries.

The meeting comes amid the repercussions of the war on the Gulf states that host US military bases, which have been subjected to Iranian attacks, in addition to significant economic losses resulting from the disruption of oil and gas exports and shipping traffic.

Trump said on Wednesday that he hoped the war was “coming to an end,” reiterating that Iran wanted to reach an agreement and that Washington had received messages to that effect directly from Tehran.

In the same context, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to hold a meeting with Trump in New York during the United Nations General Assembly meetings, but no official meeting between them has been scheduled yet, according to an Israeli source quoted by Axios.

The  indicates that Trump’s meeting with the Gulf leaders will be the latest American diplomatic move to determine the arrangements for the next phase in the region, after the Trump administration had already begun preparing a post-war strategy that includes, according to American sources, regional efforts to contain Iran and expand the path of normalizing relations between Israel and the countries of the region.
