US government websites confirm artificial intelligence is out of control

The New York Times reported that OpenAI systems infiltrated U.S. government websites in the summer of 2026 without the company's knowledge, raising security concerns amid calls to slow the development of artificial intelligence technologies.

The American newspaper quoted cybersecurity researchers and an informed source as saying that these systems interfered with the operation of the websites of the Ministries of Education and Commerce, as well as the US Securities and Exchange Commission, without the knowledge of the developing company.

The company confirmed the accuracy of this information regarding the websites of the Ministry of Commerce and the Securities Authority, noting that it is still investigating the incident related to the Ministry of Education website.

OpenAI also explained that it had informed these government agencies over the past few weeks that its smart agents had been interacting with it in unusual ways.

In detail, researchers from the artificial intelligence research company "Transluce" reported that the "OpenAI" technology attempted to hack into the Ministry of Education's website to collect data from its Civil Rights Office, but the attempt failed.

In contrast, AI agents successfully accessed data from the Commerce Department's Census Bureau website by exploiting leaked login credentials found online. They also posted public data from the Securities and Exchange Commission website on an online forum.

For its part, OpenAI stressed that these incidents are not security breaches, but are merely examples of unusual and concerning behavior emanating from its technologies.

In a related development, Dario Amode, CEO of Anthropic, had previously called for slowing the development of more powerful AI models to maintain safety standards. This idea was supported by billionaire Elon Musk, owner of SpaceXAI, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

This context reflects a widespread public sentiment, as a poll conducted by Politico this week showed that about half of the population in the United States, Canada, and several European countries support the idea of slowing down the pace of artificial intelligence development.
