Russian neurologist Alexei Mamatov listed some of the reasons for increased back pain during the cold season.
In an interview with the Russian website Gazeta.ru, the doctor said: "In the cold season, back pain may increase for some people. It is not so much the season itself that is related to the change in the daily load on the muscles and spine. There are several factors that systematically affect the condition of the lower back. In the summer, people walk more and spend more time outdoors, while in the fall, the number of hours spent sitting at home, in the office, or in front of the computer increases. Prolonged sitting in one position without breaks generates extra pressure on the vertebrae and muscles of the lower back."
He added: "The sudden return to sports activity after the summer period sometimes causes back and muscle pain, as well as chronic fatigue and lack of sleep."
The doctor pointed out that psychological state, activity level, and working conditions also affect back health, which is why the World Health Organization recommends considering lower back pain in light of a range of physical, psychological, and social factors.
Mamatov concluded by saying: " Back pain rarely starts because of a single movement or a single bad day. Most often it occurs as a result of the accumulation of several factors: a person sits a lot, moves little, sleeps poorly, and then imposes a sudden load on their body. Therefore, it is not enough to treat the location of the pain, but to look for the causes."
