Angola: suspension of salaries of doctors on strike

The country's rate of doctors is lower than in Haiti or Afghanistan, according to the World Bank.

In Angola, Labor Minister Teresa Dias has announced that the salaries of striking doctors will be suspended. Most of the country's 5,600 doctors have joined the protest movement in recent days, demanding better working conditions.

For the doctors' union, the 6% increase in base salaries announced by the government is insufficient.

Caregivers denounce hospitals lacking equipment and medicines. They accuse the government of building new facilities without staff.

The doctors' union had called for a strike after the death of 20 children in the space of a single day at the pediatric hospital in the capital Luanda. These deaths were caused by the shortage of drugs and medical equipment, according to the president of the organization, Adriano Manuel, dismissed for having given the alert.

Sudan: one person killed during a demonstration

In Sudan, a protester was killed during a rally against the military coup. The 23-year-old victim died in the capital, after being "shot in the chest by the coup forces" , Sudan's Central Medical Committee said.

This new victim brings to 93 the number of people killed by the deadly repression of demonstrations, since General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhane came to power on October 25, 2021. A coup, and violence, widely condemned by the international scale.
