The US President welcomes the truce in Yemen, but considers it "insufficient"

On Friday, US President Joe Biden welcomed the truce in Yemen, but considered it "insufficient," according to a White House statement.

Biden said in the statement , "I welcome today's announcement of a two-month truce in the Yemeni conflict. This initiative has been long awaited by the Yemeni people, and involves the cessation of all military activities of any party inside Yemen and across its borders, the entry of fuel ships to the port of Hodeidah, as well as the renewal of commercial flights from Sana'a and to the agreed destinations.

"These are important steps, but they are not enough. The ceasefire must be adhered to, and as I said before, it is essential that we end this war. After seven years of conflict, the negotiators must do the serious and necessary work to reach political settlements that can bring about a lasting peace future." for all the Yemeni people.

"I am grateful for the leadership role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman in achieving this initiative before the holy month of Ramadan. I am also grateful for the hard work done by the Yemeni government and the trust it has placed in the UN-led mediation," he added.

"The United States of America will act to deter threats to our friends and partners as we continue to strive for de-escalation and peace throughout the region. I wish the people of Yemen a peaceful Ramadan, and assure them of our continued commitment to help end this terrible war," Biden pledged.
