Driver killed during Rally Croatia testing

Irish driver Craig Brain has been killed in an accident while taking part in the Croatian Rally, the fourth round of the World Rally Championship, which will be held from April 20-23.

"It is with great sadness that the Hyundai Motorsport team confirms that driver Greg Breen lost his life today in an accident during testing for the Rally Croatia," Hyundai Motorsport driver Craig Breen said in a brief statement.

The South Korean manufacturer added, "The (Irish) navigator, James Fulton, came out unscathed from this accident, which occurred in the afternoon," stressing that "no further comment was made at this time."

Craig Brain, a 33-year-old from Waterford, finished second in the Rally Sweden, which constituted the second round of the world championship and was held last February, noting that this year he was running a partial program with the South Korean manufacturer.

He was sixth overall in the World Rally Championship standings, with 19 points, ahead of the Croatian Rally.

The Irishman climbed 9 times to the podium in the "WRC" world tours, between 2016 and 2023, finishing second 6 times and third 3 times.

Craig Brain finished last year's championship in seventh overall in the drivers' standings, and twice climbed to the podium at Rallye Monte Carlo, finishing third, and Italy second.
