A Chinese team of cardiologists has found a link between dark chocolate consumption and a lower risk of developing essential hypertension.

In their paper published in the journal Scientific Reports, the group describes how they used Mendelian randomization (a type of biological genetics) to discover more about the associations between dark chocolate consumption and high blood pressure.

Hypertension is a term used to describe chronic high blood pressure. The term essential hypertension is used when the source of the cause is unknown.

Over the past few years, there have been reports of dark chocolate consumption providing certain health benefits, due to its flavanol content.

Some of these purported benefits included reducing inflammation and other factors associated with coronary artery disease.

In this new study, the research team wondered whether it was possible that consuming dark chocolate could reduce essential hypertension, which is implicated in a range of diseases, from strokes to heart attacks.

The team's work involved using a technique called Mendelian randomization, an epidemiological methodology named after Gregor Mendel. It involves studying differences in genetic profiles in a way that shows that a particular intervention caused a particular effect, and this method has been promoted due to its ability to reduce the risk of reverse causality.

Using data obtained from the Center for Medical Research's Integrative Epidemiology Unit, which included the genetic profiles of 64,945 people of European descent, the team looked for associations between the health benefits of dark chocolate consumption and diseases such as heart failure, blood clots, stroke, coronary heart disease, and hyperthyroidism. Basal blood pressure.

Looking at their data, the researchers found what they described as a significant association between regular dark chocolate consumption and a lower risk of essential hypertension, and some association between dark chocolate consumption and a lower risk of venous blood clots.

On the other hand, the team found no association between dark chocolate consumption and any other diseases.

They point out that their findings are strong enough to warrant further study of dark chocolate and its ingredients to see if they are useful for treating essential hypertension.

A systematic review and meta-analysis (statistical analysis), conducted by an international team of researchers, included 95 studies with the aim of understanding the clinical course of cases of acute back pain (less than 6 weeks), subacute/subacute back pain (6-12 weeks), and lower back pain. Persistent back pain (from 12 weeks to less than 52 weeks).

The results found that participants with acute and subacute low back pain had significant improvements in levels of pain and disability during the first six weeks, but then recovery slowed.

While participants with persistent low back pain had high levels of pain and disability with only minor improvements over time. 

Professor Mosley says: “These findings show that back pain can persist even after the initial injury has healed. In these cases, back pain is related to hypersensitivity of the pain system, not to ongoing back injury. The authors state that identifying slow recovery in those with subacute low back pain is important so that care can be enhanced and the likelihood of persistent pain reduced.

More research is needed into treatments to help treat this common condition, and better understand it in people under 18 and over 60.
