At least 23 people were killed and more than two thousand people were injured, some of them in serious condition, as a result of the celebrations that took place on the “last Wednesday night” of the current Iranian year.

The celebrations that took place on the last Wednesday night of the current Iranian year are known in Persian as “Jaharshanbeh Suri,” according to local media reports.

Media outlets reported that "nearly 23 deaths were recorded throughout Iran, and 2,114 injuries were recorded."

She added, "Among the injured, 1,616 were referred to hospitals, including 413 seriously injured, including 152 people who were subjected to amputation and 700 who suffered eye damage."

She explained that "public transport stations were unable to operate due to queues of citizens, and many citizens did not use private vehicles to escape the traffic."

"Wednesday night" is one of "the aspects of welcoming Nowruz, which falls on March 21, and is a traditional Iranian festival to bid farewell to the last sun of the year, which is held on the night of the last Wednesday of the Persian year."
