It is expected that the new Palestinian government, headed by Muhammad Mustafa, will be sworn in before President Mahmoud Abbas, next Sunday, as the Prime Minister-designate has completed the formation of his government, according to an informed Palestinian source.

An informed Palestinian source revealed, on Thursday, that the new government headed by Muhammad Mustafa will be sworn in before President Mahmoud Abbas, next Sunday.

Anatolia Agency quoted the source close to Mustafa, who requested anonymity, that “Prime Minister-designate Mustafa has completed the formation of his government, after consulting with all sectors and unions.”

He added, "The government will be sworn in before President Mahmoud Abbas next Sunday, and it includes at least 6 ministers from the Gaza Strip."

He continued: "Farsin George Shaheen will take over the Palestinian Foreign Ministry portfolio, after holding several positions, including Commissioner General of the Independent Commission for Human Rights."

If this change occurs, it will be the first since 2009 in the position of Foreign Minister, which has been held since that year by Riyad al-Maliki.

On March 14, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appointed Mustafa to form a new government, succeeding Muhammad Shtayyeh, who submitted the resignation of his government last February, and it turned into a caretaker government.

Mustafa held several positions in the World Bank and Palestinian Authority institutions, most notably head of the Palestine Investment Fund.

The formation of the new government coincides with the administration of US President Joe Biden’s talk about the necessity of “reactivating” the Palestinian Authority, in the hope that it will assume responsibility for Gaza after the end of the Israeli war on the Strip, which Tel Aviv rejects.

Its formation also comes in light of the continuing Palestinian division at the political and geographical levels since the summer of 2006, and the failure of many local, regional and international attempts to achieve national reconciliation, especially between the Hamas and Fatah movements led by Abbas.
