The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is moving to postpone the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals to a later date, according to what media sources revealed in the past few hours.

The finals of the 35th edition of the African Cup of Nations were expected to be held in the summer of 2025, but it appears that several factors prompted CAF to study the idea of postponing it.

The continental tournament will represent a strong rehearsal for Morocco, the North African country, before hosting the 2030 World Cup finals, which will be held jointly with Portugal and Spain.

The Moroccan “Championship” website, citing journalist Mickey Junior, revealed that the Executive Office of the African Confederation will hold a working session during the next few days, in order to determine the final date for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

According to the same source, all indications confirm that the tournament will be postponed to the beginning of the year 2026 to be held in the winter, as was the case in the last two editions in Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire, respectively.

This new date will anger European teams that have long been pushing to organize the tournament in the summer, so as not to be deprived of their African stars during an important period of the football season.

The last editions of the Africa Cup of Nations witnessed postponements for several reasons, including the unpreparedness of the stadiums and the difficult climatic conditions in some countries.

What is the reason for postponement?

Several sources confirmed that this new postponement comes due to the holding of the first edition of the Club World Cup with its new system in the summer of next year.

FIFA seeks to provide the best conditions for the success of the tournament, given the difficulty of forcing players to play two strong competitions during the rest period between the two seasons.

Africa will be represented by 4 clubs, including Al-Ahly of Egypt and Wydad of Morocco during the Club World Cup, and most European teams in particular will include stars from the African continent in their ranks.
