Press reports revealed on Wednesday morning that Argentine legend Lionel Messi and Spaniard Gerard Pique were involved in a new corruption case while they were with Barcelona in the 2020 season.

Messi took center stage again in Spanish football circles after an audio leak indicating that he intervened with former Spanish Federation president Luis Robales to mediate with the European Football Association (UEFA) regarding resolving the problem of reducing the salaries of Barcelona players.

A report published by the Spanish website TheObjective stated that former Barcelona star Gerard Pique told the president of the Spanish Federation that Messi had delegated him to solve the problem of Barcelona’s salary reduction by up to 70% during the month of April 2020.

Rubiales sent to UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin his economic proposal, in which he proposes to restructure 4% of the broadcast rights for all UEFA matches, which were previously distributed in a specific way among the national federations.

Messi faced accusations of involvement in an influence-peddling case with Rubales, alongside his former Barcelona teammate Pique.

But sources from the European Union and also the Spanish Federation confirmed to ESPANOL that Messi was personally negotiating with the UEFA president regarding the urgent need to create a fund that would guarantee the payment of part of the salaries of players who were greatly affected during the pandemic period.

Messi explained to the European Union president that he would prefer not to receive any salaries if there was no money to help others.

The Spanish newspaper confirmed that establishing a fund of this type is completely legal, despite the fact that the project has not been completed.

The newspaper explained that the International Federation (FIFA) agreed with the Professional Players Association (FIFPro) and a similar fund was created at that time, weeks before the period of cessation of activity due to the Corona pandemic.
