An American university yields to the demands of the demonstrators and pledges to withdraw investments from Israel

Johns Hopkins University and the students protesting in support of the Gaza Strip reached an agreement on dismantling the sit-in they held to pressure the university administration to stop supporting companies and institutions participating in and supporting the Israeli war on the Strip.

Students at Johns Hopkins University in the US state of Maryland suspended their protests in the university square to demand the withdrawal of investments of “university endowment funds” in Israel, after reaching an agreement with the administration to review the issue of withdrawing major investments from there.

The university said in a statement published by the American network "cbc NEWS" yesterday, Sunday, "that it will accelerate the process it has already begun to review its investments, including with fund managers and companies that support Israeli military action in Gaza."

She added: “This is a truly difficult time in our world and at our university, with the ongoing conflict and human tragedy in Israel and Gaza. We very much hope that we at Hopkins can continue to focus together on the important work the university is doing to engage in dialogue and learning together regarding difficult issues.” And the complex.”

Cutting ties between American universities and sponsors and companies linked to Israel is one of the demands of the student movement that defends the Palestinian cause and calls for an end to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.

Students took advantage of the graduation ceremony season at American universities to organize protest withdrawals during official speeches, and raise the Palestinian flag during the receipt of diplomas, as happened at the University of Chicago, in addition to raising banners demanding justice and freedom for the Palestinian people and an end to genocide, as happened at Northwestern University. .

On April 18, students who rejected the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip began a sit-in on the campus of Columbia University in New York, demanding that its administration stop its academic cooperation with Israeli universities and withdraw its investments from companies that support the occupation of Palestinian territories.

With the intervention of police forces and the arrest of dozens of students, the state of anger expanded and the demonstrations extended to dozens of universities in the United States, including leading universities such as Harvard, George Washington, New York, Yale, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and North Carolina.

Since last October 7, Israel has been waging a war on Gaza that has left more than 113,000 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and about 10,000 missing amid massive destruction and famine that claimed the lives of children and the elderly.

Israel continues the war despite the issuance of a resolution by the UN Security Council to stop the fighting immediately, and also despite the International Court of Justice demanding immediate measures to prevent acts of “genocide” and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
