Colombian President Gustavo Petro decided on Wednesday to sever diplomatic relations with Israel due to the genocidal war it is waging against the Gaza Strip.

Petro strongly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and asked to join the case of South Africa, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in a case it filed with the International Court of Justice.

In his speech to the masses on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, he confirmed that an announcement in this regard will be issued tomorrow, Monday, May 2. 

He said, "Here, before you, the transitional government, the President of the Republic, announces that diplomatic relations with the State of Israel will be severed tomorrow."

Petro stressed in his speech that relations with Tel Aviv will be cut off due to "the presence of a genocidal government" in Israel.

He said, "If Palestine dies, humanity dies and we will not let it die." He continued, "Countries cannot stand idly by in the face of events in Gaza."

The Colombian president carried out his previous threat to sever relations with Israel if it did not adhere to the ceasefire resolution issued by the UN Security Council on March 25. 

Petro is the first leftist president of Colombia, and he previously directed harsh criticism at Israel against the backdrop of the bloody war that Israel is waging against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Last February 20, he compared the Israeli attack on Gaza to the Jewish Holocaust at the hands of the Nazis.

Colombia and Brazil supported the complaint filed by South Africa against Israel before the International Court of Justice, accusing it of violating the Genocide Convention approved in 1948.

Also, Colombia announced in February the suspension of the purchase of weapons manufactured by Israel, after dozens of Palestinians were killed while gathering to obtain aid in northern Gaza.

“While waiting for food, more than 100 Palestinians were killed by Netanyahu,” Petro said at the time on the
