Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived today, Tuesday, at Port Sudan Airport in eastern Sudan, on an official visit during which he will hold talks with the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, who in turn thanked him for the visit.

Al-Burhan received the Ethiopian Prime Minister upon his arrival at Port Sudan Airport, according to the official Sudan News Agency, indicating that Abiy Ahmed is holding talks with Al-Burhan during the visit (the duration of which is not announced), which is the first since the outbreak of war in the country between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

Al-Burhan thanked the Ethiopian Prime Minister for the visit, and wrote on his official account on the X platform: “Thank you, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of the sisterly Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, for your visit and your solidarity with the government and people of Sudan.”

On Monday, local media, including the private Al-Sudani newspaper, reported that Abiy Ahmed will discuss the situation in Sudan and ways to end the fighting.

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army, led by Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), have been waging a war that has left about 15,000 dead and about 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.

There have been increasing calls from the United Nations and international organizations to spare Sudan a humanitarian disaster that could push millions to famine and death, due to food shortages caused by the fighting that has spread to 12 of the country's 18 states.
