The Foreign Minister denied that Thai banks were involved in the purchase of Myanmar arms

Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa categorically denied the accusation in the report of the United Nations Special Representative that Thai banks are involved in the sale of weapons to the Myanmar military.

A Thai news report stated that the Thai Foreign Minister denied it during the House of Representatives meeting.

In a report titled "Billion Dollar Deadly Trade" by the United Nations Special Representative for Human Rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, it is said that through unnamed Thai banks, the Myanmar military was able to purchase nearly 130 million US dollars worth of military weapons.

The Bank of Thailand and the Anti-Money Laundering Office have made it clear that no Thai financial institution is involved in arms sales to Myanmar. Minister Marit said that the Thai government is committed to consistently complying with human rights and international standards.

He also said that Thailand will not cut off trade with Myanmar while the UN allegations are being resolved.

He said that despite the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, it is important to maintain trade so as not to lose friendship between neighboring countries.
The Thai Bankers' Association issued a statement on June 28 denying the UN Special Representative's report that funds are being transferred through Thai banks to enable the Myanmar military to purchase weapons.
