The death toll from the earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28 has reached 3,354 as of 6 p.m. on April 4, according to state-run newspapers controlled by the military council on April 5.

In addition, 4,508 people were injured and 220 were missing.

Of the 3354 deaths, Mandalay Region has the highest number of deaths with 2122, followed by Nay Pyi Taw with 614 and Sagaing Region with 507. Other deaths include 66 in Shan State, 44 in Bago State and one in Magway Region.

Of the 220 missing persons, 205 are reported to be from Pyay Gyi Takun and Aung Myay Tha San townships in Mandalay Region.

The National Unity Government also announced that, based on the figures collected as of April 4, there were 3,162 deaths nationwide due to the earthquake.

According to the NUG, the highest number of deaths was reported from Mandalay Region, with 1,808. In addition, there were 66 deaths from Bago Region, 686 from Sagaing Region, 497 from Nay Pyi Taw, and 105 from Southern Shan State.

Rescue workers in the earthquake-hit areas say the actual number of dead and missing could be higher than the military council and NUG's statements.

The NUG statement said that despite financial support, people in Sagaing and Mandalay, which were hit hardest by the earthquake, are facing shortages and high prices because markets cannot open to buy food.

They also said they need cash support to rent cranes and vehicles to clear the rubble and debris.

The NUG statement said that security, health and other related issues are being raised due to the inability to systematically implement temporary resettlement, and that aid agencies need to find ways to systematically distribute aid to earthquake-affected people..
