Doctors say 30 to 60 percent of children under 3 years old suffer from malocclusion

A pediatric dentistry specialist who graduated from the University of Indonesia, drg. Aliyah, Sp.KGA, said that 30-60 percent of Indonesian children under the age of three are affected by malocclusion based on data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI).

"The prevalence of malocclusion is very high, around 80 percent of the Indonesian population according to SKI 2023. Imagine if one of us is affected by malocclusion with a prevalence of 30-60 percent of children under 3 years old," said Aliyah in a press conference in Jakarta, Monday.

Aliyah explained that malocclusion is a mismatch or abnormality in the position of the teeth in the upper and lower jaws when they meet. While citing the World Health Organization (WHO), malocclusion is a defect or functional disorder that can be an obstacle to the physical and emotional health of patients who need treatment.
