Most of us breathe without thinking, however, how we breathe, whether through the nose or mouth, can make a big difference to our health.
Heart surgeon Dr Jeremy London has explained the difference in a video on social media, Timesofindia reported on Sunday, presenting the science behind why breathing through the nose is much better than through the mouth.
From calming the nervous system to improving heart health, the benefits of nasal breathing go beyond just getting air into your lungs.
One of the biggest benefits of breathing through the nose is that it activates the parasympathetic nervous system.
This is sometimes called the body’s “rest and digest” mode. When triggered, it slows the heart rate and lowers blood pressure, creating feelings of relaxation and calm.
This is in contrast to the sympathetic nervous system, the “fight or flight” response, which is easily activated by mouth breathing.
Through nasal breathing, one can transition the body into a relaxed and balanced state.
