South Korean rescuers pulled a man from a collapsed construction site in a subway station near Seoul, as the search continued for another man trapped under the rubble.
The survivor was trapped 30 meters underground in the rubble for about 13 hours, and was conscious when he was found and taken to a nearby hospital, said Im Gwang-sik, an official with the Hwangmyeong City Fire Department.
Shortly before the accident, the site was evacuated after authorities were alerted to the risk of collapse, having discovered numerous cracks in the columns used to build the underground tunnels.
Shortly after, the landslide occurred, causing a portion of the road to collapse above ground and damaging several nearby buildings.
Five workers conducting a safety inspection above ground could not be reached, but four were later found safe, while an excavator driver remains missing.
