The official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that President al-Shara was among those welcoming the Palestinian president, along with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani. The agency noted that the meeting was attended by a number of officials from both sides, without revealing any further details about the content of the talks.
Earlier today, official Palestinian TV announced Abbas' arrival in Damascus, noting that his visit comes as part of strengthening coordination between the two sides in light of regional developments and the rapid developments in the Palestinian territories, particularly the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.
It's worth noting that this visit follows a previous meeting between the two presidents on the sidelines of the emergency Arab summit held in Cairo last March. A high-level Palestinian delegation headed by Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa also visited Damascus last January, where it held extensive talks with President al-Sharaa and a number of Syrian officials.
On December 8, 2024, Syrian factions took control of the country, ending 61 years of Baath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family control.
