"A positive step." Turkish Vice President praises the decisions to lift US and European sanctions on Syria.

"The decisions taken by the United States and the European Union to lift sanctions on Syria are very positive steps," Yilmaz said in a post on the X platform on Tuesday.

He added, "If these sanctions imposed on the previous authoritarian regime continue, they will become a punishment for the innocent Syrian people and an obstacle to the process of rebuilding Syria."

Yilmaz stressed the importance of taking similar steps toward the Gaza Strip, which is subjected to Israeli aggression and a blockade that denies it even the most basic humanitarian aid.

He continued, "Otherwise, no one has the right to even speak about basic human rights and international humanitarian law," stressing the need for the international community to assume its responsibilities in this regard.

He continued, "We in Türkiye will continue to support the stability and prosperity of the Syrian people, and defend the just cause of the oppressed Palestinian people in every forum."

On Tuesday, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaya Kallas announced a decision to lift economic sanctions on Syria.

On May 16, the US Treasury Department announced that it was working with the State Department and the National Security Council to implement President Donald Trump's directive to lift sanctions on Syria, which began in 1979 and became more comprehensive with the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
