Fidan: The Russian-Ukrainian war is witnessing a turning point toward a diplomatic solution. Syria must be supported at this stage.

This came during his speech at the informal meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the member states of the Organization of Turkic States, held in the Hungarian capital, Budapest.

Fidan explained that the current situation represents a turning point in the diplomatic process toward a solution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, expressing hope that the talks held in Istanbul would contribute to a comprehensive ceasefire and, subsequently, a lasting and just peace.

Istanbul hosted peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine last Thursday and Friday, resulting in an agreement to exchange 2,000 prisoners between the two countries.

In another context, Fidan addressed the Palestinian issue, stressing that using starvation as a weapon against civilians in the Gaza Strip and threatening them with displacement from their lands is unacceptable. He emphasized the need for the international community to take decisive and effective steps against Israel in order to promote peace and security in the region.

Israel has continued its policy of systematic starvation of approximately 2.4 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, closing the crossings to humanitarian aid that had been accumulating at the border since March 2, exacerbating the famine crisis and resulting in the deaths of numerous people.

On the other hand, Fidan noted that the Syrian government has achieved tangible results as a result of its engagement with regional and international actors, thanks to Türkiye's intensive diplomatic efforts to lift the sanctions imposed on it.

The Turkish Foreign Minister stressed the importance of the Organization of Turkic States' member states' support for Syria at this stage.

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaya Kallas announced yesterday, Tuesday, a decision to lift economic sanctions on Syria.

On May 16, the US Treasury Department confirmed that it was working in conjunction with the State Department and the National Security Council to implement President Trump's directive to lift sanctions imposed on Syria since 1979, which were expanded after the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
