The Russian presidency said in a statement on Wednesday that Putin visited Kursk on the border with Ukraine on Tuesday.
The statement added that during his tour, the Russian president met with acting governor of Kursk Oblast, Alexander Khinshtein, held a meeting with the mayors of the region, and visited the Kursk-2 nuclear power plant currently under construction.
Putin noted that "the situation in the border areas of Kursk remains difficult despite their liberation from the enemy."
Last April, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Kursk border region. It noted that combing operations were still underway, while mine clearance operations had begun and assistance was being provided to the city's authorities to help them restore normal life.
In August 2024, Ukrainian forces launched a surprise advance into the Kursk region, in the largest cross-border offensive launched by Kyiv's forces since the war began more than two years earlier.
Since February 24, 2022, Russia has launched a military attack on its neighbor, Ukraine, and has demanded that Kyiv abandon its membership in Western military entities as a condition for ending the offensive. Kyiv considers this to be "interference" in its affairs.
