Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a press conference ahead of the Google I/O 2025 event that the number of monthly active users of the Gemini artificial intelligence application has exceeded 400 million.
The number of users of Google's artificial intelligence chatbot application has now approached that of OpenAI's ChatGPT application, according to a TechCrunch broadcast on Tuesday (20/5).
In recent court documents, Google estimated that ChatGPT by March 2025 would have around 600 million monthly active users while Gemini only had 350 million monthly active users.
The presence of ChatGPT has posed a significant threat to Google's core business, namely search engines, as it offers a new, more interactive way for users to access information on the web.
Google introduced Gemini to meet that challenge, and it seems to be paying off.
The company is also making internal changes to the Gemini development team. Josh Woodward, the man behind the successful AI app NotebookLM, is now leading the Gemini project.
