In a "historic" meeting in Riyadh, Trump affirms his support for Syria and calls on Sharaa to assume responsibility for ISIS centers.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement following the Riyadh meeting that " a historic meeting took place between Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and US President Donald Trump. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also participated in the meeting via phone call, in the presence of the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the United States."

She added, "During the meeting, the importance of lifting sanctions on Syria and supporting the recovery and reconstruction process was emphasized." She explained that Bin Salman "stressed the necessity of this step to achieve stability in the region."

President Trump affirmed "his country's commitment to standing with Syria at this critical juncture," while Sharaa expressed his "gratitude for the regional and international support," emphasizing that "Syria is confidently moving toward the future."

According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, the meeting addressed "ways for Syrian-American partnership in combating terrorism and cooperation in eliminating the influence of non-state actors and non-Syrian armed groups that hinder stability, including ISIS and other threats."

The Syrian Foreign Ministry noted that this meeting is scheduled to be followed by an upcoming meeting between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and his US counterpart, Marco Rubio, to "follow up on bilateral coordination and consolidate the understandings reached."

In this context, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said in a post on the X platform that the US president called on his Syrian counterpart to assume responsibility for the detention centers of ISIS terrorists in the country's northeast.

She added, "President Erdogan commended President Trump for lifting sanctions on Syria and pledged to work side by side with Saudi Arabia to promote peace and prosperity in Syria."

Levitt also explained that the Saudi Crown Prince praised Trump's move, describing it as "courageous." Trump expressed his gratitude to President Erdogan and the Crown Prince for their friendship, assuring Sharaa that he had a great opportunity to effect historic change in his country.

Levitt noted that Trump "encouraged President Sharaa to do a great job for the Syrian people," and urged Sharaa to "sign the Abraham Accords with Israel, inform all foreign terrorists to leave Syria, and deport Palestinian terrorists," she said.

According to Levitt's statements, Sharaa emphasized the great opportunity represented by the Iranian withdrawal from Syria, expressing his commitment to the 1974 disengagement agreement with Israel. He also called on American companies to invest in Syria's oil and gas sectors, indicating his aspiration to make Syria a vital link facilitating trade between East and West.

Levitt reported that the meeting also addressed the Russia-Ukraine war and the situation in Gaza, confirming that Sharaa thanked Trump, the Saudi Crown Prince, and President Erdogan for their efforts in organizing the meeting.

On Wednesday morning, Trump met with Sharaa in Riyadh, the first meeting between the two leaders. In remarks during the 2025 Saudi-US Investment Forum in Riyadh on Tuesday, Trump announced that he would order the lifting of US sanctions on Syria to give its people the opportunity to "grow and develop."

He added that he made this decision after discussing it with both Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Trump arrived in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, at the start of a Gulf tour that will also include Qatar and the UAE.
