The Israeli army said in a statement: "The central command headquarters of the former Syrian regime (Bashar al-Assad between 2000 and 2024) was located on the summit of Mount Hermon and destroyed."
He added, "Over the past week, our forces... completed a raid targeting the central command headquarters of the unit responsible for the Mount Hermon region of the ousted Syrian regime." He continued, "The forces found military infrastructure belonging to the former regime, including weapons depots... and all equipment was confiscated or destroyed."
Since 1967, Israel has occupied most of the Syrian Golan Heights. It exploited the new situation in the country following the fall of the Syrian regime, occupying the Syrian buffer zone and declaring the collapse of the 1974 disengagement agreement between the two sides.
It also occupied the strategic Mount Hermon, which is only 35 kilometers from the capital, Damascus. It lies between Syria and Lebanon, overlooks Israel, and can also be seen from Jordan.
Although the new Syrian administration, headed by Ahmad al-Sharaa, has not threatened Israel in any way, Tel Aviv has been launching airstrikes on Syria on an almost daily basis for months, killing civilians and destroying Syrian military sites, vehicles, and ammunition.
